Orig. in Davis, Calif., by R.S. Bringhurst and Victor Voth, California Agr. Expt. Sta. Introd. in 1963. Lassen (25% Blakemore, 25% Nich Ohmer, 19% Banner, 19% Fendalcino, 12% U.S. 634) × Cal 42. 8-16, a complex hybrid involving Sierra as the female parent (37% Nich Ohmer, 19% U.S.543, 16% U.S. 634, 16% New York 4626, 6% Blakemore, and 6% Narcissa); Tioga is a sib of Fresno and Torrey; cross made in 1953; selected in 1955; tested as Cal 53.9-2. <b>Fruit:</b> average size 12 to 14 g; long conic to wedge; skin medium red, glossy, tough; seed yellow, flush with surface; flesh medium red, exceptionally firm, flavor good, soluble solids 7% to 10%, acidity medium high; shipping quality excellent; production very high, comparable to Lassen, higher than Fresno, Torrey, Solana, and Shasta; ripens early, about with Fresno, later than Torrey and Lassen. <b>Plant:</b> similar to Lassen color and general conformation but more vigorous; highly susceptible to verticillium wilt; moderate resistance to virus (occasionally manifests crinkle symptoms); fairly tolerant to salinity (similar to Lassen); adaptable to all growing areas of California, particularly with summer planting.
