Orig. in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, by Canada Dept. Agr., Res. Sta. Introd. in 1957. Valentine × Sparkle; cross made in 1948; selected in 1950; tested as Ottawa 481. <b>Fruit:</b> large, but tends to become smaller later in season; skin attractive, bright red, glossy; flesh lighter red than Grenadier and Guardsman but darker than Redcoat, acidity not high, flavor fine, firmer than Catskill, Dunlap, and Howard 17; good for dessert, processing, and freezing; ripens before Howard 17. <b>Plant:</b> virus-free; significantly outyielded Howard 17 during first 6 days of harvest, with total yield equal to or higher than that of Howard 17 and Dunlap; produces runners freely; vigorous but not as tall as Redcoat; somewhat susceptible to leaf spot, leaf scorch, and powdery mildew; highly resistant to verticillium wilt.
