Orig. in New Brunswick, N.J., by New Jersey Agr. Expt. Sta. Introd. in 1962. N.J. 8 (Petrel × Early McIntosh × [Melba × (Williams × Starr)]); cross made by G.W. Schneider; selected in 1955; introd. by L.F. Hough and Catherine H. Bailey of the above station; tested as N.J. 21. <b>Fruit:</b> large, averaging 2 3/4 inches in diam.; one-half to three-fourths of the skin washed and splashed red, attractive; firmer, has better shelf life and better shipping ability than most other early summer apple varieties; ripens about with Melba.
